Medical Assistant Program Director and Lead Instructor
Typical weekly work schedule:
11 am-7 pm two days
12 pm-9 pm two days
10 am-4 pm on Fridays
Teaching schedule: 12:30-3:30 pm on Monday-Friday and
two evenings from 6-9 pm (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday).
The MA Lead Instructor and Program Administrator is part of the adult education team at Briya Public Charter School — a leading two-generation education program serving immigrant parents and their young children in Washington, D.C. Briya’s workforce development programs provide integrated education and training the field of healthcare and early childhood education. Through these programs, adult learners prepare for national industry recognized certifications in high-demand careers while also increasing their academic and workforce development skills and knowledge.
Briya has a strategic partnership with Mary’s Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center, further strengthening student families with comprehensive medical, dental, and social services.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Medical Assistant Program:
Coordination Responsibilities (50%): The MA Lead Instructor and Program Administrator will be responsible for academic, programmatic, and administrative coordination of the two-generation Medical Assistant (MA) training program.
- Collaborate with Early Childhood and Adult Education instructors at Briya to integrate two-generation programming into medical assistant (MA) coursework.
- Identify and select key program instructors/guest speakers. Provide support and supervision to Medical Assistant Instructors and guest speakers.
- Collaborate with Registration team to enroll students for the program.
- Ensure student retention through academic counseling and collaboration with supportive resources as needed.
- Ensure classroom materials and equipment are provided. Ensure safety and sanitation of all labs, equipment and supplies.
- Organize master competency skills review sessions.
- Collect student evaluation data.
- Provide support to the MA Program Manager
Curriculum Development Responsibilities:
- Ensure curriculum follows AMT and CAAHEP guidelines and continue to enhance based on practice guidelines and needs, inclusive of feedback from Employer Advisory Board.
- Develop module syllabi, daily lesson plans, Smartboard presentations, materials, and homework assignments for medical assistant modules.
- Module topics include communications, community health, medical business practices, anatomy & physiology, health promotion & disease prevention, basic math, medications, lab medicine, and medical law and ethics.
- Develop daily lesson plans that include objectives, instructional activities with differentiated instruction, and assessment that target the skills & knowledge needed to successfully pass the Registered Medical Assistant exam.
- Foster an inclusive, scholarly, and collaborative learning climate.
- Develop curriculum materials that meet the needs of students at risk of academic failure or students not making reasonable progress toward obtaining the skills and knowledge needed to become a certified Medical Assistant.
Medical Assistant Instructor Responsibilities:
- Teach MA curriculum with fidelity to approximately 20-30 students.
- Teach child development curriculum to MA students.
- Prepare students to work competently and safely as Registered Medical Assistants
- Prepare students to take and pass the Registered Medical Assistant Exam.
- Employ principles of Adult Learning Theory for content delivery
- Review student test data and prepare and instruct students in review course material
- Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students’ varying needs
- Suitably challenge, engage, serve and communicate with students to encourage their participation and learning while maintaining mutual value and respect
- Attend and participate in all team meetings and Briya MA professional development.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work as a member of a team
- Commitment to develop and contribute to a community of educators
- Ability to teach classes in English, with preference for instructors who also have additional language skills in order to support students.
- Strong organizational skills
- Expertise in interpersonal and oral presentation/written communication skills.
- Effective in directing and evaluating student learning and laboratory performance and be prepared in education theory and techniques.
- Knowledge of healthcare industry and awareness of trends
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Medical professional (examples: LPN, RN, NP, MD, or DO).
- 3-5 years of related practical work/clinical experience, preferably in a community health care center.
- Demonstrated ability to teach in ways that are interactive, project-based, and promote self-discovery and critical thinking.
Physical Demands – Regularly required to sit; frequently required to reach with hands and arms, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk or hear; must be able to lift objects up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
Work Environment – Mostly in a typical office and/or home setting with quiet to moderate noise level.
